Good morning from the heart of London! Today, Methodist Central Hall Westminster opens its doors to the world, just as it did eight decades ago.

Eighty years ago this week, the United Nations General Assembly met for the first time right here in our Great Hall. A Methodist congregation vacated their seats in a practical act of hospitality to make history possible. They chose resolve over spectacle, birthing a commitment to save future generations from the scourge of war.

Today, we are honored to welcome HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh, the President of the General Assembly, the Secretary-General, and diplomatic leaders from across the globe. Alongside our church family and the public, we gather not for nostalgia, but with a shared intent to heal our fractured world.

As a global Christian family following Jesus, we continue to live out the call: “Blessed are the peacemakers.”

As part of the work underway to explore and recommend to the Methodist Conference the full breadth of reparations required for the injustices suffered by enslaved African people, Methodists are encouraged to watch and reflect on the film, After the Flood: The Church, Slavery and Reconciliation, which tracks the influence of the Church in providing moral justification for the trade of enslaved Africans in the eighteenth century.

This week is National Vegetarian Week, when the Vegetarian Society invites us to consider a vegetarian diet.

In the present day, people adopt a vegetarian diet for a variety of reasons, whether to improve animal welfare or to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But for John Wesley, abstaining from meat and wine was a matter of personal health.

In 1747, he wrote to the Bishop of London that, although abstention was not required by the Christian faith, a certain Dr Cheyne had told him of its health benefits. Wesley’s vegetarianism apparently offended some who thought that he was trying to make a show of his sanctity by avoiding meat and wine, but he was merely pleased to see that ‘I have been freed […] from all bodily Disorders.’
