The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has launched a consultation on proposed changes to its education standards for nursing and midwifery pre-registration programmes.

This includes proposals to reduce the minimum number of nursing programme hours from 4,600 to 3,600.

When it comes to pay, the government's own figures show the need for urgent improvement.

Each year, the NHS asks staff their satisfaction with their pay. Our new analysis of the last 3 years shows there has been no improvement in pay satisfaction for any of the staff groups covered by Agenda for Change.

Just 1% improvement reported by AHPs.

0% improvement reported by nurses.

And a shameful -2% in satisfaction from the wider healthcare team.

This government was not in power when the rates of satisfaction fell so low. But the failure to improve things since has happened on their watch. It's time for them to get in the room with us and provide meaningful funding to improve the AfC pay structure.

A win for UNISON members! NHS Staff Council gives green light to new mileage mechanism to be implemented over the coming months. Rates will increase from 1 June 2026.

Further guidance and FAQs will be issued in the coming weeks to support the implementation of the new mechanism.

Once again, the government has accepted a higher pay recommendation for doctors than for their Agenda for Change colleagues.

Time and again, archaic pay review body processes value some parts of the NHS workforce more highly than others.

NHS staff keep our health service going — yet the government’s 3.3% pay award doesn’t match the cost of living, and does nothing to fix long-standing issues with pay.

Despite everything, staff remain committed to the NHS — but they need a government that’s committed to them. If ministers want the NHS to recover, they need to start by valuing the people who make it work.
