The one thing no hotelier ever wants on their hands is a rat infestation, but that was exactly what the proprietor of an establishment in Ealing, W5 faced. Most of his guests were business visitors either from other parts of the UK or abroad and while he insisted on the very highest standards of hygiene in his hotel, he found himself with a persistent and difficult problem.
There had been a number of rat sightings over the previous few days and several guests had heard the news, becoming uneasy. As far as staff could gather, there was not an established population of rats in the building but one large adult individual that was entering through an unknown access point and loitering in the kitchen and dining areas. A female member of staff, from Poland, had seen the animal and been so afraid she nearly fainted.
With the famous episode of Fawlty Towers lodged in our minds we arrived at the hotel early one morning, having received a panicked phone call. The rat had been cornered and ran into a small storage cupboard, whereupon a cleaner had closed the door and locked it in. Staff listened to the rat scratching around inside the cupboard, but were afraid to try to catch the animal.
We were able to place several traps in strategic points around the cupboard door, while sealing the perimeter, thus preventing the rat from escaping should it evade the traps. Once we opened the door, the job was quick and we were soon leaving the hotel with the rat before most of the guests had woken up.
