It's always a good idea to get to get your chimney/log burner swept when you move into a new home. If the seller hasn't left a certificate to say it's been swept in the last 12 months, then it's definitely recommended for peace of mind.

A fight until the end, and probably the worst/biggest nest I've faced. Only one winner though💪.....even if it did break one of my rods🫥

A customer noticed flies coming from their log burner a few days ago and this was the reason why. Dead birds in chimney flues will always attract flies which means they'll find a way into your home.

"I love a good birds nest."

Words you'll never hear a chimney sweep say......

This nest was completely blocking an open chimney that the homeowner started using again last week. The fire was last on in the spring and since then, a nest had been built causing smoke from the fire to back up in the chimney and enter the room. After a bit of time, sweat and profanity it was dislodged and fully removed to bring the chimney back to working order.

If you decide to maybe use your chimney for the first time or even after a long time, it's always best to get it swept first. There could be years and years worth of soot up there that needs removing. Sweeping will increase the efficiency of the fire, reduce the chances of a chimney fire drastically and reduce the chances of smoke coming back into the room.

Always start a fire small so that heat can get in the chimney or liner and aid the smoke getting out of the pot. Overloading the fire initially will produce lots of smoke but not enough heat, increasing the liklihood that the smoke will come back into the room.

Burning damp or unseasoned wood is never a good idea. This stoves liner was completely blocked and issuing smoke back into the room, because of burning wood that wasn't ready to be burned.
The soot combined with the excessive moisture, clings to the side and solidifies when cooled, and continues to build up with each burn and cool down. Twinned, with not being swept at least annually is a bad combination.
The result is a coke like substance instead of of fine soot, and it can limit the life of the liner and make your fire unsafe.
In one of the photos, you can see the contour of the liner moulded in the residue.
