🔥 Government Consultation on Solid Fuel Burning: What You Need to Know
The UK Government has launched a new consultation on domestic solid‑fuel burning, focusing on reducing emissions to improve air quality.
Here’s what it actually means for stove owners:

No ban on stoves – existing appliances are not being removed.

Stricter emission limits for new stoves placed on the market.

Mandatory labels on stoves and fuels so customers can clearly see emissions and permitted fuels.

Tougher penalties for suppliers selling non‑compliant fuels like wet wood.

As always, using the right fuel, keeping your chimney swept, and burning clean and dry makes the biggest difference to performance, safety, and emissions.

📅 Consultation closes: 19 March 2026

🔥 Hardwood Logs: Quick Guide

Not all hardwoods burn the same — knowing how each behaves keeps your stove running well and your chimney safe.

Oak – hard to light, but burns long and steady. Best added to a hot, established fire.
Ash – lights easily, burns evenly, and gives consistent heat. Your everyday, safe choice.
Beech – hotter than oak but slower than birch. Great when you want good heat without waiting all evening.
Birch – fast, lively flames. Perfect for lighting a fire or boosting heat quickly. Works best mixed with denser hardwoods.

✅ Only use Ready to Burn logs
✅ Keep airflow open
❌ Don’t smother the fire or overload the stove

Different hardwoods do different jobs. Burn the right log at the right time, and your chimney stays cleaner, safer, and ready for winter.

🔥 Lighting, Refuelling & Extinguishing a Fire

Getting the basics right can save you fuel, reduce smoke, and protect your stove and chimney liner. Here’s how to manage your fire properly from start to finish:

✅ Lighting – Use the Top-Down Method
Start with larger logs at the bottom, kindling above, and firelighters on top. This method heats the flue quickly, creating an updraft that draws smoke up the chimney instead of letting it enter the room.

✅ Refuelling – Add Logs One at a Time
Refuel when the fire has burned down to glowing embers. Open the stove door slightly to equalise pressure, then fully open it. Add one log at a time to maintain airflow and avoid overloading the stove.

✅ Extinguishing – Let It Burn Out Naturally
Close the air vents to reduce oxygen and let the fire die down on its own. Avoid using water — it can damage your stove and flue.

By following these steps, you’ll reduce smoke, increase efficiency, and ensure a cleaner burn every time.

🚨 CO Alarms – When Did You Last Test Yours?
Carbon monoxide is invisible, odourless, and lethal. If you're burning anything — wood, coal, smokeless fuel — a CO alarm isn’t optional. It’s essential.

When did you last test yours?
🧠 Press the test button. It takes seconds.
📍 Got one? Make sure it’s in the right place — not shoved in a drawer or miles away from the fire.

If you’re not sure where to put it, how many you need, or how they actually save lives, give this a read:

Blackened Stove Glass? Here’s How to Fix It! 🔥

If your stove glass keeps getting covered in soot, here’s what might be causing it – and how to fix it:

✅ Burning Wet Wood – Damp logs create more smoke, leading to blackened glass. Always use dry, well-seasoned wood with a moisture content below 20%.

✅ Not Enough Airflow – Fires need plenty of oxygen to burn cleanly. If your stove has air vents, keep them open enough to maintain a bright, hot flame.

✅ Low Burn Temperature – A slow, smouldering fire produces more soot. Use the top-down method (big logs at the bottom, kindling on top) for a hot, efficient burn.

✅ Flue or Stove Build-up – Excess soot inside the stove or a blocked flue can cause smoky fires. Regular chimney sweeping keeps your stove running as it should.

🔥 Sticky Creosote Build-up! 🔥

This is what happens when damp wood is burned! The brush head in the picture is covered in sticky, tar-like creosote, which builds up inside the chimney and can become a serious fire risk.

🚫 Burning damp or unseasoned wood creates excessive smoke and cools the flue, leading to creosote deposits like this.

✅ The fix? Always burn properly seasoned wood with a moisture content below 20% to keep your chimney cleaner and safer.

If you’ve been burning wet wood, book a sweep today to stay safe.

The top-down method is the best way to light a fire, whether you’re using wood or smokeless coal. Recommended by HETAS and Burnright, this method ensures your fire burns hotter, cleaner, and more efficiently, while reducing smoke and tar buildup in your chimney.

How to Light a Fire the Right Way (Top-Down Method)
🔥 For Wood:
1️⃣ Start with large logs at the bottom – Use properly seasoned or kiln-dried logs (moisture below 20%).
2️⃣ Layer dry kindling on top – Arrange in a crisscross pattern for better airflow.
3️⃣ Add firelighters – Use natural firelighters, not paper or cardboard.
4️⃣ Light from the top – This allows the fire to burn downward, preheating the flue and reducing smoke.
5️⃣ Keep air vents open – Start with vents fully open, then adjust once the fire is established.

🔥 For Smokeless Coal:
1️⃣ Start with a bed of smokeless coal – Spread a layer of HETAS-approved smokeless coal at the firebox base.
2️⃣ Add kindling on top – Arrange dry kindling over the coal to help it ignite.
3️⃣ Use firelighters – Place them among the kindling for a smooth start.
4️⃣ Light from the top – Allow the kindling to ignite, gradually heating the coal below.
5️⃣ Control the airflow – Keep the bottom air vent open to ensure the coal burns properly.

Why the Top-Down Method Works Best
✅ Cleaner burn & less smoke – Lighting from the top reduces unburnt gases and emissions.
✅ More efficient heating – The fire preheats the chimney, improving draft and helping your fuel burn efficiently.
✅ Longer-lasting fire – Large logs or coal ignite gradually, so you won’t need to refuel as often.
✅ Better chimney health – Reduced smoke means less soot and tar buildup, keeping your flue cleaner longer.

💡 Tip: Always use seasoned wood or HETAS-approved smokeless coal for the cleanest burn. A well-maintained chimney helps your fire burn more effectively, so regular sweeping is essential.

Sweeping a Grand Fireplace Today! 🏰🔥

With big open fireplaces like this, preparation is everything! There are loads of small gaps that need sealing up before the sweep, or there’s a risk of soot escaping into the room. But don’t worry, in the unlikely event this was to happen—I’ve got a fail-safe! My dust scrubber captures any stray soot or dust, keeping everything clean and tidy.
A proper sweep, done right. 💨✅
