Hoarding Awareness Week May Be Ending — But Awareness Must Continue

As Hoarding Awareness Week comes to a close, it’s important to remember that hoarding disorder does not disappear when the campaign ends. For many individuals and families, the challenges continue every single day.

Some Important Facts About Hoarding Disorder
Hoarding disorder is a recognised mental health condition.
It affects people of all ages, backgrounds, and lifestyles.
Hoarding is not simply “being messy” or “collecting too much.”
Many people experiencing hoarding feel overwhelming anxiety, shame, grief, or fear connected to possessions.
Isolation and stigma often stop people from asking for help.
Recovery and support take time, patience, trust, and understanding.
Awareness Should Continue Beyond One Week

Yesterday, we had to say goodbye to a large old ash tree in our garden. It had stood tall for many years, but inside it was beginning to rot. Every storm brought worry that it could eventually fall and cause harm.

Now it has been safely cut back to stump height. Although it looks like an ending, it really isn’t. Ash trees are resilient, and fresh shoots can grow again from the base — new growth replacing the old heavy trunk.

This morning, I noticed something straight away when I walked into the living room… more light. The room felt brighter, calmer, and more open.

It made me think about hoarding and clutter.

Sometimes we hold onto things for so long that they become part of our surroundings and part of our story. Letting go can feel difficult, even when what we are holding onto has become overwhelming or no longer healthy for us.

But creating space is not about loss.
It is about safety.
It is about breathing room.
It is about allowing light back in.

You do not need to clear everything overnight. Even small changes can create space for fresh growth and new beginnings.

Sometimes the brightest spaces appear after we finally let go of what was blocking the light.
