Crop edges and hedgerows are often the first places pest movement can be detected.

By placing monitoring boards around these key areas, growers can capture early signs of pest pressure before it develops deeper inside the crop.

With TruePest AI, trap images can be scanned and analysed to help identify pest activity and build a clearer picture of where pressure is developing across the crop.

This turns monitoring from a manual observation process into mapped, data-led insight — supporting more targeted crop protection decisions throughout the season.

Pest hotspots are easier to manage before they become established.

MagiPal is designed to attract naturally occurring and released predators and parasitoids into the crop, supporting IPM programmes against pests such as aphids, whitefly, thrips, midges and lepidoptera.

Used as part of a wider monitoring and biological control strategy, it can help improve the distribution of beneficial insects across the crop.

Moth activity is just around the corner—now’s the time to start monitoring.

Pheromone traps play a key role in tracking vineyard moth flights, helping growers understand when activity begins and how populations develop through the season.

Early monitoring supports better, more timely pest management decisions.

Thrips populations often develop before visible crop damage occurs.

In many crops, early activity goes unnoticed until feeding damage becomes established. Monitoring systems using blue sticky traps and attractants allow growers to detect these early population increases and track pest pressure over time.

This early insight supports more accurate timing of management decisions within integrated pest management programmes.

Choosing the right lure is key to early season detection.

In early spring, many pest species begin moving before populations are visible within the crop. Monitoring at this stage is focused on detecting low levels of activity and identifying when pressure is starting to build.

Maxlure kits are designed to support early detection by increasing trap effectiveness during this critical period. When combined with well-positioned traps, they help provide earlier warnings of pest movement into crops.

Early planning leads to earlier insight — supporting more informed pest management decisions throughout the season.

Adult strawberry blossom weevils typically become more active from April onwards.

March priorities:
• Field edge assessment
• Identification of overwintering proximity
• Pre-bud-stage monitoring deployment

Waiting for bud damage significantly narrows decision windows.

Monitoring infrastructure should be in place before migration begins.

Spotted Wing Drosophila don’t disappear over winter

Adult flies overwinter in sheltered areas and begin moving as temperatures rise. March is when activity starts to go unnoticed — making it the most important time to start monitoring, not reacting.

The UK suction trap network consistently shows aphid movement among the earliest seasonal biological indicators. (https://insectsurvey.com/)

While species differ by crop, early aphid flight confirms:
• Temperature thresholds are being met
• Dispersal conditions are active
• Protected crops may already be exposed

Even low trap counts in March are significant when interpreted in trend context.

Aphid detection in March should prompt review of biological release timing and crop vulnerability — not automatic intervention.

Optimising Midge Control with a Push–Pull Strategy

Correct placement is essential to maximise the effectiveness of a push–pull approach in polytunnels.

MagiPal Placement
• Position every 10 metres down the middle row of each polytunnel
• Apply at a rate of 100–120 units per hectare
• Increase density in identified hotspot areas

Super Plus White Rolls
• Install along the tunnel leg rows
• Position close to ground level (see image example in blueberry)
• Approximately 16 rolls per hectare is generally sufficient

Strategic placement ensures consistent coverage and improved monitoring and control across the crop.

Blueberry Gall Midge: First Generation Timing Is Critical

As UK blueberry crops move into early bud swell, conditions become favourable for the first generation of Dasineura oxycoccana.

The initial emergence is particularly important.

If early populations establish unchecked, subsequent generations can build rapidly — increasing crop pressure, intervention frequency, and the risk of carryover into the following season.

Capturing adult movement during this early window allows pressure to be understood before visible bud distortion develops.

Managing the first generation effectively can significantly reduce the need for repeated pesticide applications later in the season — and support stronger crop performance overall.

Protection starts early.
