Restrictions are easing and we are starting to return to the office to slave over a keyboard once more. But lurking between the keys, hidden on the mouse and nestled in your phone lies more than 10 million bacteria - 400 times more than on the average toilet seat.

Unhygienic working conditions are a 'key contributor' to the 131 million working days lost each year in the UK with the number 1 cause being bacteria and viruses that can multiply on hard surfaces and can remain infectious for up to 24 hours.

The average desk has always been a prime breeding ground for infections but with the threat of the Covid-19 virus lurking around every corner, office workers need to be extra careful and ensure they are regularly disinfecting their desks, telephones, keyboards and computer mice.

A resignation note left by a cleaner for her boss has gone viral on Twitter, with people speaking out against the poor treatment of support staff.

Julie Cousins walked out of her job as a cleaner for HSBC last Friday after 35 years, leaving a note explaining she was leaving due to being "dressed down" in the office by a manager.

Ms Cousins wrote in the note that the treatment she experienced was "nothing more than aggressive and cruel" with her final words reading "So going forward, please all of you remember - in a world when you can be anything, be kind, because you are all no better than the cleaner."

Smile, be kind, be polite, say thank you, it often means much more than you probably realise.

As cleaning teams usually work out of office hours it can be difficult to keep track of whether they turn up on time or in some cases, actually arrive at all!

At Spotless Commercial, all our cleaners are required to log in when they arrive on-site and log-out again when they leave, using our electronic Time and Attendance management system. This ensures we know our teams have arrived to work and completed their tasks safely and also provides evidence to our clients that work has been completed as scheduled.
