Hospitality talks a lot about sustainability. But one of the industry’s biggest environmental challenges is still hiding in the laundry room.

💡Did you know that a hotel with 100 rooms can wash up to 750 pieces of linen daily?

🧺Across the UK’s hotel industry, that’s an estimated 7.5m pieces of linen washed. With every wash, invisible microfibres are released into our waterways adding an est 500,000 tonnes of microplastics to our ocean’s annually.

🚨For perspective, that’s the equivalent of chucking 50 billion plastic bottles directly into the ocean.

♻️ At Cleaner Seas, we’re redefining sustainable tourism. Not only by intercepting microfibre from washing machines, but directing waste back to our Microfibre Recycling Centre, closing the loop on microplastic pollution.

🌊 People travel to admire the beauty of nature, but in doing so, many unknowingly contribute to microplastic pollution that threatens delicate coastlines, marine life and the long term health of our oceans.

Meet Dan - one of our technical engineers, surfer and ocean defender 🌊

Whether he’s out catching waves or working hard on plugging our microplastic filters in laundry systems, the ocean is at the front and centre of his purpose.

“As a surfer and as someone who lives by the sea - the ocean shapes my whole life”

Proud to mark another year as an accredited Living Wage employer with the 🎉

The Cleaner Seas crew are showing up to deliver our mission: plug in microfibre filter tech into laundry systems worldwide, to prevent microplastics from polluting our oceans ✊🏽

Paying the real Living Wage isn’t just a badge. It’s a commitment to ensuring our people earn a wage that reflects the cost of living and supports a decent standard of living.

You can’t build a responsible business without valuing the people who power it.

🗣️ Cleaner Seas Group Announcement

We’ve partnered with the University of Portsmouth’s Revolution Plastics Institute to tackle one of the most overlooked sources of pollution: microfibres from industrial laundry systems.

From cruise ships to hotel laundries, our washing machine filters are now being deployed in real-world environments, both on land and at sea.

🔬 This research will:

* Analyse what’s being captured
* Quantify microfibre pollution at scale
* Explore how we can stop pollution at source

Awareness & innovative solutions drive action, but scientific research is what will drive industry & legislative change🔬

It’s safe to say there’s plenty of spotlight on water right now 📸 - sewage in UK rivers, microplastics pouring into our oceans and rising concerns over flooding and droughts, adding to water scarcity and communities’ access to clean water.

This is why World Water Day was introduced by the in the 1990s to keep water high on the global agenda.

For businesses, this is a reminder, not just another awareness campaign:

💧Disclose how you use water
💧Help restore what you take
💧Question what pollutants exist in your water as a result of your business activities.

🚨 National survey finds microplastic pollution around Britain’s coastline could be double than previously recorded.

Here’s to the incredible people pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery straight out of the sea. Findings fuelled by 2,000-mile row and research led by reveal significantly higher concentrations of microplastics, likely influenced by rougher seas 🌊

Have you heard of ”Plastic Soup”?

When people hear the phrase, they often envisage floating islands of bottles and bags drifting in the sea.

The reality is far more complex.

Plastic soup contains tiny particles of plastic debris. Microscopic packaging, abandoned fishing gear, and lost containers all suspended from the surface of our waters to the sea bed.

It is called “soup” because it isn’t one solid mass. It’s stirred in continuously by wind, tides and currents. Once there, incredibly difficult to remove.

“Microplastics may knock the breath out of our oceans”

Microplastics are now pervasive throughout marine systems. It’s an invisible, rapidly growing threat and concentrations are expected to further increase in the coming decades.

💚 Phytoplankton, the ‘lungs of the Earth’, live in the sunlit layers of our oceans and absorb CO₂ through photosynthesis, producing roughly 50% of the world’s oxygen.

💚 Zooplankton feed on the phytoplankton and other zooplankton, and sink into the depths of the ocean, taking the carbon with them where it can be stored for centuries.

This is the biological carbon pump, which is critical to climate regulation and the food web ✅

Microplastics create a biological bottleneck:

❌ Microplastics attach to phytoplankton, blocking light. This ‘shading effect’ interferes with CO₂ uptake, directly disrupting photosynthesis.

❌ Zooplankton readily ingest microplastic particles, mistaking them for food. This creates a bottom-up, negative effect that starves the entire marine food web.

❌ When plankton die, they form ‘Marine Snow’ that sinks to the deep ocean, locking carbon away. Buoyant microplastics slow down this process down and keeps carbon at the surface.

The ocean is our greatest ally in stabilising the climate, regulating carbon, and contributing to the oxygen we breathe. Protecting our oceans is no longer just an environmental goal; it is a necessity for the lungs of our Earth 🫁 🌎

A pivotal moment for our CEO, Dave Miller at Downing St yesterday with chancellor Rachel Reeves.

In attendance with the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce and the British Chambers of Commerce, leaders stopped at nothing to advocate SME innovation hubs & its economical power houses rooted from the Cornish coast 🌊

A big cheers to acceleration for Cornwall Economy 🙌

🌊 We have been featured in Jan/Feb issue exploring:
“Can the cruise industry go carbon-neutral?” 🚢

The article underscores the scale of ocean plastic pollution, with the United Nations estimating 75–199 million tonnes of microplastics is already circulating in our seas.

At Cleaner Seas Group, our view is straightforward: tackling ocean health means addressing the pollution we don’t always see. Circular filtration can play its part - but lasting change only happens when technology is matched by commitment across policy, supply chains and the wider maritime system.

And importantly, this work is never done alone. Thank you to the who demonstrate a real duty of care for ocean health.
