🐝 We had a call out today to remove a bumble bee colony that had set up in a disused garage. The garage was being cleared out and a number of people had been stung.

We collected the bees and have relocated them, feathers and all, into a disused birdhouse in our garden.

A well-established nest can contain up to 400 bumblebees and could be around the size of a small football. However, some species have much smaller nests with only around 50 workers at their most active.

If you think you have bees, feel free to give us a buzz for some friendly advice 🐝

🐝 Bee Update!

Both colonies of bumble bees that were relocated last week are thriving in their new locations.

When done correctly, bumble bee relocation can be an effective method of control when you can't leave them be(e🐝).

Always be sure to use trained professionals to ensure the safety of both the bees and yourself.

If you need help with anything pest related, feel free to give us a buzz 😁

This bumble bee nest had got so big in the customers loft that it had collapsed.

Unlike the distinctive honeybee nest, which has tightly packed hexagonal cells for raising offspring and storing honey, the inside of the bumblebee nest can appear quite messy and disorganised.

There are little wax pots (used to store nectar), wax brood cells, and a wax covering. The silk cocoons of the bees developing into adults can also be seen.

If left alone, bumblebees are generally calm creatures who quietly go about their business visiting flowers and usually avoid or don’t pay any attention to people. Female bumblebees (queens, workers and cuckoo females) will usually only sting defensively if they feel threatened by someone or something, for example vibration from a lawnmower, getting too close to the nest. Male bumblebees don’t have a sting and so, even if they wanted to, they can’t harm people.

We always try to save as many bumble bees as we can. Our garden loves them!

If you need help or advice feel free to give us a buzz 🐝

🐝 Tree bees (specifically Tree Bumblebees) build nests in birdhouses because they perfectly mimic their natural habitat: elevated cavities that offer a readymade, insulated space.Their preference for these boxes comes down to a few key factors:

The Perfect Starter Home: Birdhouses provide a warm, dark, and elevated cavity that protects the queen and her brood from harsh weather and predators.

Ready-made Materials: Tree bees love to nest in pre-existing debris. A birdhouse already lined with moss, feathers, and dry grass by previous bird inhabitants is completely "move-in ready".

Eviction of Birds: The queens are known to use a specific, high-pitched vibration and warning buzz to easily scare off sitting birds, allowing them to take over an already established, furnished nest.

Tree bees are exceptional pollinators and their colonies are seasonal. The best course of action is to leave them be, as they will naturally die off by late summer.

If you are unable to leave them then we can help with relocation 😊

🐝 A few weeks ago we found a queen wasp starter nest in our own shed, we were tempted to leave it so we could show you the whole process but it would have meant putting a bee suit on every time we wanted to cut the grass 🀣

🌞 As the weather warms up this weekend, you may notice heightened wasp activity around your home.

You likely have a wasp nest if you spot a steady stream of wasps flying to and from a specific point, hear persistent buzzing in walls or lofts, or discover a papery, grey, spherical structure in your eaves, shed, or loft space.

We offer 100% guaranteed wasp nest treatments from as little as Β£60+Vat.

🚨The recent media coverage surrounding an outbreak of hantavirus has understandably raised concern amongst the public.

The rodents most commonly encountered in and around properties in the UK are the Brown Rat and the House Mouse. Rodents can carry a range of diseases and should never be ignored.

It is important, not to become complacent regarding rodent activity in homes, workplaces, food premises, farms and public buildings. Rodents are capable of contaminating food, damaging property through gnawing and nesting behaviour, and spreading other illnesses through their urine, droppings and parasites.

Good hygiene, proofing, waste management and professional pest control remain the most effective ways to reduce rodent risks.

West Yorkshire Pest Control advise avoiding direct contact with rodent droppings or nesting materials. Areas affected by rodent activity should be cleaned carefully and safely by qualified professionals.

πŸ€ We offer a comprehensive pest management programme that includes identification of points of ingress and areas of activity. We can also offer an additional decontamination service of areas where rodent urine and droppings have been located.

🐿 Squirrels can cause a whole host of problems when they decide to make their way into your home.

❗️They cause significant damage by gnawing on wires, chewing wood, tearing up insulation, and contaminating spaces with urine and droppings. This can lead to loud noises, potential health risks from parasites and disease and structural issues amongst other things!

πŸ‘€ Squirrels are capable of gnawing through tough materials such as wood, plastic and even some metals as seen in the attached photo!

πŸ€ Rats commonly enter homes via sewers, using damaged or old pipes to find warmth, food and shelter.

❗️This is a very frequent source of infestations, with many problems stemming from defects in the drainage system, making it crucial to check for vulnerabilities like uncapped pipes or cracks, especially in older properties.

πŸ‘As part of our initial visit for rats, we will lift any accessible inspection chambers on your property to check for rat activity as standard.

If you think you might have a pest problem give us a call for some friendly advice 😊
