We recently finished a job rescuing a beautiful carpet that suffered extensive damage from common clothes moth larvae—that sneaky culprit that loves to chew through wool, silk, and natural fibres. While the adult moths themselves don’t feed, their larvae are the real troublemakers—tiny, creamy-white caterpillars that devour keratin-rich materials and leave unsightly holes behind.
Did you know?
There are around 2,500 species of moths in the UK, but only a few are pests. The common clothes moth larvae can cause surprisingly severe damage to carpets, wedding dresses, and even cherished heirlooms.
These larvae are particularly drawn to fabrics soiled with perspiration or food stains, making cleanliness key.
Adult moths are shy and seldom seen—they avoid light and tend to hide in dark, undisturbed places like wardrobes, under carpets, or behind radiators.
Top tips to prevent moth damage:
Wash or clean textiles before storage—moths are attracted by stains and body oils.
Store items in airtight containers or garment bags, especially when they’ll be unused for long periods.
Brush wool or fur items after wearing them outside to remove dust and debris.
Keep spaces dry and well-ventilated. Regularly vacuum carpets, rugs, wardrobes, drawers, and even cracks behind radiators.
Conduct regular inspections of stored clothing, blankets, and carpets.
If infestation occurs, freeze the item at –18 °C for at least two weeks—this can kill eggs and larvae.
Clean out seldom-used spaces like attics or chimneys—old bird nests can harbor moth species like the white-shouldered house moth.
