When they first walk through the door of your business your clients should feel like they can trust you. They should know you are serious about providing them with an amazing service and if your entrance and office are anything but pristine they might question how serious you are. If they are seeing dust and grime they might wonder where else you are being a little too relaxed.

When you have had a busy or especially stressful day it is so important to feel that your home is your calm in the storm. One way to do this is by making sure your entryway is embracing you when you walk in.

You can do this by removing any excess items that might have gathered there (as this tends to be the “throw down and I’ll look at it later” spot), and by having warm lighting instead of white light.

The white lighting that is bright can make a space feel harsh and stressful, even if the box told you it “mimics the sun”.

We have created an amazing entryway checklist to help you maintain this space better. It is the first thing you see when you come in and the last thing you see when you leave so don’t underestimate the importance of keeping it tidy.

This cannot be the first thing you see when you walk in.
This one absolutely required a lot of patience and elbow grease.
The entryway, and especially the closet are high traffic areas and are big places that buildup occurs. We come in with a lot of mud and dirt and that tracks in to the entryway of your home so it often requires more upkeep than we even realize.

It also helps set the tone of your arrival home. When you walk in it’s the first thing that you see, and if you notice dirt and grime right away you might feel annoyed as soon as you walk in your home. Equally you might feel overwhelmed because it’s just another thing on what feels like a never-ending and ever-growing to do list and you just want it all to stop.

Wren is a total body and soul hugger. Any scenario in which she can’t be touching you is a nightmare.

If a feeling of overwhelm hits you as soon as you walk in the door it could be a cognitive overload. Having open mud room and entryway storage for jackets can be aesthetically pleasing until you have multiple winter jackets - the ski one, the work one, the its cold but damp one - and suddenly it just looks like a mess you can’t really do anything about because you really do use all your jackets.

Using doors to hide the clutter can reduce any background noise when you walk in. It can also take away that feeling of “I have to sort this” and the mental list you start to create.

The entryway can also be the place where we drop things when we walk in and don’t always come back to them. Or where we have our walking gear or mittens and having a space to put those in drawers can also help.

Even if you have a small space, hiding away the items that pile up and begin to feel like clutter can help until you are ready to face them.

You should feel a sense of lightness when you walk in your home, like you can be yourself and relax.
