When you need a handrail, do not accept a verbal description or a napkin sketch.
Ask for three things before you say yes:
A drawing you can read. Side view and plan view, with the rail height, where it turns, where each bracket and post anchors, and what it anchors into.
The code it is built to. In Ontario that is the Ontario Building Code and CSA B651 for accessibility: rail height, grip size, clearance from the wall, how the ends finish, and the load the anchors must hold.
Your options. Wall-mounted or post-mounted, where the rail returns, finish and colour, and what each choice costs.
The image here is a real page from a quote sent to a recent customer. Every part is numbered and explained in plain language. The homeowner saw exactly what they were getting before the first anchor went into the brick.
A handrail is something you trust with your weight every day. Raise your expectations.
