The driveway was a sheet of black ice.
Mrs. Gable, 88, stood at her front door staring at the mailbox. She was waiting for a letter from her sister.
She took one step with her cane and slipped. She caught herself on the doorframe, terrified. A fall at her age could be fatal. She turned back inside, defeated.
Then she heard a truck rumble.
It was the garbage truck. The driver, Mike, had seen her struggle from the street.
Mike put the truck in park. He grabbed a bucket of salt from his cab.
He walked all the way up the long driveway, sprinkling salt as he went.
When he reached the door, he didn't just leave.
He offered Mrs. Gable his arm.
"Hold on tight, Ma'am. I'm heavy. I won't slip."
He walked her slowly to the mailbox and back, keeping her steady on the ice.
He isn't paid to be a caregiver. He's paid to haul trash. But today, he did both. ❄️🚛
