Ice Dams: Why the Next Few Weeks Matter for Your Roof

With the amount of snow already on roofs across Simcoe County, we’re entering the most common ice-dam danger period of the winter.

As daytime temperatures begin to rise toward freezing and nights drop back below zero, snow on the upper roof melts and refreezes at the eaves. This creates ice dams that trap water and force it back under shingles — often leading to leaks inside walls, ceilings, soffits, and fascia.

❄️ Ice dams don’t usually cause problems during deep cold.
🌡️ They cause damage during melt–freeze cycles, which are expected in the coming weeks.

Signs to watch for:
• Large or growing icicles
• Thick ice along roof edges or in gutters
• Water stains inside near exterior walls
• Dripping or leaking during mild days

Preventative snow and ice removal can reduce the risk of water damage before it starts.

If you’re concerned about ice buildup on your roof, it’s best to address it before sustained melting begins.

❄️ Extreme Cold Alert – What This Means for Your Roof ❄️

With one of the coldest air masses of the winter settling into Ontario this weekend, we wanted to share a quick but important update about what’s happening on roofs right now.

When temperatures plunge like this:
• Snow on roofs does not melt evenly
• Heat escaping from homes can cause partial melting near the roofline
• That melt refreezes, creating ice dams
• Ice dams trap water, forcing it back under shingles and roofing materials

The tricky part?
Many homeowners don’t see a leak right away. Damage often shows up later in winter or early spring, when temperatures rise and trapped water finally finds a way inside.

⚠️ Important to know:
• Even if snow has slid off metal roofs, ice may still be building underneath or along edges
• Shingled roofs with lower pitch are especially vulnerable
• Ice dams are often heavier and denser than they appear from the ground

Cold stretches like this actually increase risk, because the freeze–thaw cycle becomes more aggressive once temperatures fluctuate again.

✅ What homeowners can do now:
• Watch for large icicles, thick ice at eaves, or uneven snow lines
• Check attic insulation and ventilation if possible
• Address ice buildup before interior damage appears

If you’re unsure what’s happening on your roof, a professional assessment can help prevent much bigger issues down the road.

Stay warm, stay safe — and don’t ignore what’s happening above your head.

Ontario is facing an exceptionally rare Arctic blast, with the coldest air mass on Earth settling over the region. Mid-level temperatures are expected to plunge to around –50°C, conditions usually only seen during extreme Siberian cold outbreaks. 🧊❄️

Meteorologists warn this isn’t a short cold snap. Instead, it signals a deep and prolonged cold spell that will grip much of the province for an extended period.

At ground level, Toronto and much of Ontario will experience brutal wind chills well into the –30s, making even short periods outdoors dangerous without proper protection. 🥶

This extreme cold is expected to put significant pressure on daily life across the province, including:

• 🚇 Transit systems facing operational challenges
• ⚡ Power demand surging as heating use increases
• 🚑 Emergency services dealing with higher risk situations
• 🧤 Serious exposure risks, including frostbite and hypothermia

Officials are urging residents to limit unnecessary travel, dress in multiple warm layers, and check in on vulnerable neighbours as the Arctic grip tightens across Ontario. Stay safe and stay warm. ❤️‍🩹
