Peace Over Perfection: How to Create a Memorable Holiday

by: Nicole Martel • posted on December 10, 2025

Can I tell you a secret? It’s kind of embarrassing because I love pretty things - and Christmas décor is one of my absolute favourites - but I sorta really hate wrapping presents.

I KNOW.
I must be a terrible person or something.

But sitting down to wrap everyone’s gifts feels like some kind of production-line torture. I’m awful at repetitive tasks - my brain glazes over and my eyes start to twitch.

And honestly? I feel bad about it sometimes because Pinterest is filled with perfectly wrapped, beautifully embellished gifts. If social media is to be believed, “everyone else” is doing it perfectly.

Somewhere along the way, special turned into perfect - and that’s just exhausting.

But here's the truth: the best memories rarely come from perfection. They come from the slow, real, messy moments.

The Pressure We Carry - and Why It Doesn’t Work
Many of us quietly carry the invisible role of “holiday magic maker.

"We keep the mental lists of: Gifts to buy, Meals to make, Décor to put out...who we’re hosting, what kids need for school events, and the expectations attached to all of it. It’s a lot. And most of it goes unseen.

The Secret Ingredient to a Memorable Holiday Season
Memorable moments are almost never the perfectly staged ones.

My favourite holiday memories often come from the simplest traditions - the ones that aren’t Instagram-ready, the ones where something goes sideways, the ones where somebody’s wearing pyjamas, the dog is misbehaving, or the tree almost falls over.

It’s the deliberate slowing down - even for five minutes - that creates connection. Not the flawless photo.

3 Ways, Choose Peace Perfection

1. Simplify Expectations
Decide what truly matters to you, not what the internet says should matter.

Don’t enjoy baking gingerbread houses? Skip it.

Love stringing popcorn? Do that instead.

Pick the events and traditions that feel aligned with your family — and release the rest.

Set a clear budget and communicate it. Boundaries support peace.
______

2. Prioritize Connection Over Production
Shift your focus from creating the perfect holiday to experiencing it.

Remember: your presence is worth more than any present.

Movie nights, baking cookies, slow evenings, quiet mornings -these are the moments that become core memories.
______

3. Leave Room for Rest
Rest is productive.

It calms your nervous system, recharges your energy, and sets the tone for your whole home.

A rested mom creates a happier, more peaceful household.

Schedule pockets of rest like appointments - because they’re just as important.
_______

Planning Makes Peace Possible
Even though planning takes a bit of time, it makes peace possible.

Writing things down — digitally or with pen and paper — frees your mind and gives you clarity. You don’t have to hold everything in your head.

That’s why I created The Simple Holiday Plan, a free roadmap that gently guides you through:

Reviewing and simplifying weekly

Defining your holiday vision

Setting boundaries & budgets

Mapping key dates

Creating simple master lists

It’s designed to protect your peace, not complicate it.

FAQs: Simplifying Holidays
How can I simplify without feeling guilty?
By remembering why you want to simplify.
You’re not taking away from your family — you’re creating more space for what truly matters.
Guilt often means you care. Peace means you’re caring wisely.

What if my family expects me to do everything?
Have an honest, calm conversation about what’s realistic this year.
Let them know you want the holidays to feel calmer, not busier, for everyone.
Most people respond well when they understand the intention behind the change.

How do I get everyone on board with a simpler holiday?
Invite them into the decision-making.
Ask each person what they value most this season.
When everyone feels heard, they naturally support a more peaceful, intentional holiday.

Take a breath, take in the moment - it doesn't have to be perfect.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays - however you celebrate, I hope you find a moment to pause, breathe, and enjoy the season.
