• Gas fireplaces need cleaning every 1-2 years whether its used or not.

• They can collect dust, debris, toys, moths, bees, wasps, pet hair, dander from pets and humans, birds, bats, cd’s, kid’s books, barbie clothes, Lego etc. I find all kinds of items that do not belong in the unit. People do not realize what ends up in the unit when they are not looking.

• An inspection gets done during the cleaning to check for loose wires, cracked burners, blocked air flow paths, logs in wrong, and defects that may be in the glass like spidering (glass is weakened over time)

• If the burner is slow lighting it can be from the unit being dirty too long, the thermocouple being dirty, and/or wall switch needs replacing-common problem on gas fireplaces-whether you use it or not-constant draw on them.

• Gas fireplaces can contribute to health issues for anyone with respiratory issues or asthma in the home-when the fireplace is turned on it moves the dust, debris etc. out into the room and may cause further respiratory issues.

• If the fireplace is left dirty and not inspected for years-there is also the potential for fire hazard. I have found kids books, cd’s, crayons, paper etc. in top of units behind the louvres. Pet hair and many other objects can end up in the bottom and build up over time, also potentially cause a fire.
• Pet hair in the bottom built up can also plug up your fan and cause it to fail after a while when you do not get it cleaned regularly. This can avoid maintenance issues as well.

• Regular inspections and cleanings are key to keeping you healthy and safe. Preventing possible fire hazards are extremely important.

I’m Barb Evans the owner of Mountainview Fireplace Services a locally and lady owned company of 22 years.
I clean, inspect, troubleshoot and restore gas fireplaces.
I don’t do any repairs.

Did you know gas fireplaces require regular maintenance? They sure do!

Spring and summer is the best time to get them into shape.

Every 1-2 years the following should be done:

-Gas fireplaces should have the glass cleaned yearly to prevent permanent staining

-Inspect the parts in the units by also removing the glass door and removing the contents in the unit

-Check underneath inside the fireplace for any dirty fans, build up of pet hair or other objects that don’t belong

-If there is a build up of black soot on the walls inside the unit or logs, it means you have an air flow problem. Book a cleaning to get this corrected ASAP

-Check how quick the burner comes on, once you turn the wall switch on. If the burner is slow to light, cleaning the thermocouple may help it light faster or replacement of the wall switch is needed.

All of these things should be checked regularly to ensure proper functioning of the gas fireplace and prevent possible house fires.

RESTORATION involves painting the firebox flat black while I’m in the unit doing an inspection and a cleaning.
I paint out the brass to modernize the look of the gas fireplace at a fraction of the cost to replace it.

If you would like to book a cleaning and inspection and have me look after all of this for you, just call Barb at (780) 236-0686
