“Dead Leg” one of the updates to the 2021 UPC code. Dead leg is added into definitions at section 206.0.

“A section of potable water pipe, which contains water that has no flow or does not circulate.”

There isn’t really a lot of information on what exactly determines what a dead leg is like how long of a pipe. I’m sure in the codes to come. There will be more explanation on it. Something to think about when you’re working on a commercial or private building if you see waterlines that are unused, they can Have potential health risks to occupants.

Section 309.6 was also added “ dead legs shall have a method of flushing.”

IAPMO said “When water is not drawn through a plumbing system or other building water system over an extended period of time, the water becomes stagnant. Stagnation supports the accelerated growth of many harmful microorganisms, such as Legionella, that can cause great harm to building occupants.”

When capping off a line, it is important to keep it as short as possible.
