Big congrats to Troy Vanleeuwen, this year's winner of the Abell Research & Internship Award at Conestoga College! Abell has partnered with Conestoga since 2017. Each year, faculty nominate students for the award, and the winner is chosen alongside the program coordinator. Troy is studying in Conestoga's Bachelor of Environmental Public Health program. He came to it after finishing his BSc at the University of Guelph, not really knowing what public health was at the time. Since then, he's completed his practicum at Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health and is working toward becoming a certified Public Health Inspector. "I want to thank my donor for believing in me and my journey. It took a lot of sacrifice to get to where I am today, but it was so worth it. Noticing more flies around your dumpster or patio lately? You're not alone; it's that time of year. Heat speeds up their breeding cycle, and dumpsters, grease, and food waste give them everything they need. Regular cleaning helps a lot: rinse the dumpster, keep lids closed, don't let grease build up. Still seeing flies even when things look clean? A lot of our customers spend time outdoors in the summer, so we wanted to share what's been in the news about ticks here in Eastern Ontario.

Anaplasmosis is getting more attention lately. It's the second most common tick-borne illness in Canada, spread by the same blacklegged ticks that carry Lyme disease, and cases have been climbing across the province. We support the G. Magnotta Lyme Disease Research Lab at the University of Guelph, whose research has taught us a lot about how ticks behave and what puts people at risk.

Ticks aren't just in the deep woods. You'll find them in parks, trails, and backyards. A few things that help:

• Keep grass, shrubs, and outdoor areas trimmed
• Clear leaf litter and brush
• Check yourself, your kids, and your pets after time outside
• Keep an eye on tick activity in your area

Right now, yellowjackets, hornets, and wasps are actively building their colonies, and yards, eaves, and gardens are common places for them to settle in. Watch for:
• Increased buzzing or insect traffic in one spot
• Papery nests under eaves, deck, or in trees
• Small holes in the ground with insects flying in and out

Great teamwork from our Kitchener Branch!
On May 16, Bryan M. and the team were at Victoria Park at 5 a.m. for our annual Canada Goose relocation. Every year, we partner with Ontario Wildlife to safely move the park's geese to the Hullett Provincial Wildlife Area near Goderich, helping get the park ready for summer visitors and city events. This year, we relocated 174 geese, up from just 107 when the program started in 2015! Nearly 100 goslings stayed behind as they were still too small to make the trip. The best part? The geese barely needed any guidance. They swam right up to the trailer like they'd done it a hundred times before. A huge thank you to Brad A. for leading the program, Rory P. for the kayaks, and the whole crew who set their alarms before the sun came up to make it happen. We're proud to play a small role in keeping our communities and green spaces thriving.
