Designing out the concept of waste is a radical thought. It represents a fundamental shift in how we perceive and interact with the resources available to us and pushes us towards a circular economy where this existing material library is kept in continuous use. And, ultimately, designing out waste inspires innovation – encouraging the development of new materials, business models and technologies that prioritise circularity.

Solus’ Spolia range is one such innovation – a British-made terrazzo tile made with low carbon cement and 21 standard colours, offering designers and architects a unique, bespoke option to incorporate demolition waste and elements of existing sites in their projects, from brick, stone and metal to glass and hard plastics. Every speck within the tiles tells a story, creating a narrative of reuse and history – and demonstrating the potential for creative and circular material solutions

Are you still getting the question “What’s better — Wood or steel? Paper or plastic? Cotton or hemp?”

The truth ::
Circular design isn’t a material contest — it’s a systems approach.

Some better questions to ask…

☑️ What already exists?
☑️ What can be reused?
☑️ What locks in value?
☑️ What can be unmade?

The inventive company has transformed the building industry by turning agricultural waste items into ecologically acceptable building materials.

The work of the Ghanaian-Filipina architectural scientist and researcher focuses on the reuse of agricultural waste and biomaterials.

To return value to the earth, she investigates alternative forms of building and living together. For example, Lokko uses coconut waste and mycelium (fungal thread) to design large-scale gateways and tunnels. By using recycled natural resources from Ghana, she aims to reduce the further depletion of exhausted land.

Concrete, a major construction material, fractures over time and requires large amounts of cement and aggregates for maintenance.

By using biomimicry for self-healing, cracks are repaired, improving durability, saving raw materials, and reducing carbon emissions. This method involves microorganisms for both passive and intrinsic healing of concrete.

has developed a low-carbon marine self-healing concrete to achieve carbon neutrality.

Proud to be invested in — their collaboration with on the Catifa Carta is emblematic of the circular economy.

Exactly 29 sheets of this paper are then layered and bound together using pressure and a natural resin binder derived from agricultural waste streams.

Catifa Carta was designed to be fully disassembled, allowing the chair to be easily repaired and maintained to extend its lifespan.

Instead of becoming waste, PaperShell can actually become a carbon store and a soil enhancer at the end of its life by burning the material in the absence of oxygen in a process known as pyrolysis.

This prevents the carbon stored in the wood residues from being emitted into the atmosphere and instead locks it away in a carbon-rich substance that can be used to enrich soil and grow more trees.

Feature on FENDI — Reimagining ‘scrap’ and ‘waste’ materials, turning them into stunning visual merchandising displays like the 2022 Fur Tree Forest in Milan and crafting offcuts of Cuoio Romano leather into the iconic FENDI Signature Bag.

These actions challenge the notion of waste, suggesting that it’s merely a construct of our imagination.

Critical materials, often taken for granted, emerge as the conduits of transformation. These materials, including energy, water, sand, and minerals harbor unique properties and hidden talents that can be harnessed for optimal efficiency.

Radical resourcefulness isn’t merely about harnessing materials; it’s about summoning a revolution - a profound shift that realigns our values and actions.
