On this day 22 years ago, Grays Point firefighter Peter Estcourt lost his life firefighting a fire near Beaurmaris Drive, Menai.

Peter was working in the Still Creek Valley, just 4 weeks prior to his 21st birthday.

The fire which started on 2 December 1997, in the Holsworthy Training Area as a result of lightning, later burnt down 11 homes in the Barnes Crescent area, damaging 30 others.

We are thinking of Peter’s family, friends and colleagues today.

We will never forget the sacrifice he made protecting the local community.
