🌧️ ☔️ ⚡️
Wow… what a storm this will be, New South Wales. An East Coast Low is on the forecast—are you ready?
A powerful low-pressure system will slide down the NSW coast tomorrow, rapidly intensifying into an East Coast Low by tomorrow night, sitting offshore from Port Macquarie and driving severe weather into the coast until Thursday night. The latest forecast has shifted the worst impacts further south, sparing some areas from major rainfall totals. Here’s what we know:
The Forecast:
Models show the system tracking south this week, intensifying tomorrow and peaking offshore from Newcastle early Wednesday. The system is expected to stall Wednesday morning, locking Sydney, the Hunter, and nearby areas in severe conditions. By Thursday, the low will slowly move east and begin clearing by Friday. Severe weather is expected from Mallacoota (Vic) to Port Macquarie, including Narooma, Ulladulla, Batemans Bay, Wollongong, Sydney, Gosford, Newcastle, Nelson Bay, Forster, and Taree from Tuesday to Thursday. Damaging to destructive winds and isolated heavy rain are likely.
The Impacts:
Wind is now the main threat. With the system shifting south, we can expect persistent east to southeast winds up to 125km/h on the coast and around 100km/h inland. Squally showers will make these gusts even stronger, causing possible damage to trees, powerlines, and minor property, plus dangerous coastal erosion from large seas.
Rainfall won’t be as extreme as first expected. Forecasts now suggest 100–200mm along the coast from north of Wollongong to Newcastle, with heavier falls in coastal hills near Gosford and Newcastle. Widespread flooding is unlikely, but isolated flash flooding and minor to moderate river flooding are possible—so river levels should still be monitored. The reduced rainfall is due to a cooler atmosphere, which holds less moisture.
Preparation:
Stay calm and make basic preparations today—secure backyard items, trim trees, and park cars under cover. Keep watching the forecast. This is a serious storm, but it’s the kind of weather NSW sees almost every year.
Stay safe and enjoy your Sunday. Cheers 🍻
