I done a thing!

Finished my stairs 😍

Chuffed to bits with how they've turned out.

Not many people can say that they've built a staircase from trees that they've cut down in their own garden!

Could I have built some stairs from MDF? Yeh, gross

Im a big believer in doing things to the best of my ability, and if I can't do that in my own home how can clients expect me to do it in theirs?

This project was certainly a labour of love, soo much time went into milling the timber down from twisted slabs but good things take time.

And it paid off

The stairs are made from Camphor Laurel, classed as an obnoxious w**d but it's a beautiful timber to work with

We have stairs πŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ halfway there!!

Despite the family coming down with gastro over the weekend I've still managed to poke along.

It's been a labour of love, soooooo much time has gone into preparing the timber, from the trees we cut down nearly 3 years ago!!

We chose to leave the live edge on the stringers, giving a more natural raw look.

It's nice having stairs that don't creak, but now we won't hear the kids sneaking around πŸ‘€

For the wood nerds πŸ€“, the 5th video along shows a traditional technique called draw boring, you offset the dowel holes, which pulls the mortise and tenon together super tight!!

Now I've just got the next set to make.......

Happy new year!!

I've started building my stairs πŸ™Œ

And in typical fashion have drastically underestimated how much work goes into milling timber down from slabsπŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

But I will keep poking along

What do they say, you should take more time building jigs than the actual job at hand.....

Anyhow Ive got everying set up so it's shouldnt take long πŸ‘€

These are the trees we cut down when we cleared our block, it's satisfying to be using the timber.

The Armchair is finished πŸ™Œ

This is my entry for

What a journey it's been but I think it was worth it

I wanted to create a piece of furniture that felt worn and used as though your grandad's read his daily newspaper on it.
The beauty of using reclaimed timber is it already has a story to tell, the nails , the borer holes, the bolts, the splits and cracks all add to the feature.
As a carpenter I usually do my best to hide any flaws in the timber but this has allowed me to show it off.

I don't normally mix many timbers together but I feel they all add to each other

Spotted gum (old studs)
Blackbutt (old joists, also full of nails)
Silky oak (silky smooth cushion,my favorite bit)
Hoop pine
Oregen (old rafters)

For something that was probably going to end up in the fire pile just goes to show what a bit of imagination can do!

Why didn't I build something smaller?
Mmmm because I'm an idiot

It's certainly one of a kind because I will not be building another one!

It weighs around 100kg πŸ˜…

Cheers

Another day on the armchair!

Getting closer, it's starting to look how I envisaged at the start and not just a stack of timber.

The woodcarver from saved me today!!
But you do need to wear ppe and a Micheal Jackson glove helps eeee heeee

You don't realise how long it takes to sand something round......

I've got one more weekend available before the deadline, with lots of sanding left and legs to make I'm running out of time 😭

If all else fails at least the kids like it πŸ˜‚

Well I've started πŸ˜…

I've entered , build anything from anything you have lying around.

It just so happens I have a bit of timber saved from old jobs, hardwood studs, joists, bearers, you name it!!

So I'm making an armchair, out of wood....
I've never made anything like this but I do enjoy doing something different!

It's in early stages, it just looks like a stack of timber but just wait......

It also already weighs about 80kgs, if there's a weight category I might win that round!!

Wooowee, what a big deck you have πŸ˜‰

Busy couple of weeks on this merbau deck.

2000 lineal meters of decking

6500 screws

37 posts cut around plus the mitred cornersπŸ˜…

It's come up a treat and we are chuffed with the end result

Everyone has their own way of doing decks, they all look good for the first few months but that changes when the mitres start opening up , and the boards swell and shrink depending on the time of year

The way we've done this it will still look good in years to come

It's all in the details.....

And I must say, the screws have been a pleasure to use, not a single one cammed out or snapped!!
