Some termites build mud tunnels to travel unnoticed into homes.
These pencil-sized tunnels, also called mud tubes, are built from soil, saliva, and termite droppings to protect termites as they move between their underground colony and a food source.
The tunnels help keep termites moist and hidden from light and open air while they travel through walls, foundations, piers, and other structures. Because they’re often tucked away in hidden areas, many homeowners don’t notice them until significant damage has already occurred.
Mud tunnels are one of the most common warning signs of subterranean termite activity in Australian homes.
