🏆 FINALIST -Australian Small Business Champion Awards 2026 🏆

Twenty years ago, my mum Carmen started a cleaning business out of necessity. She wanted a career that would allow her to be present for her family while still providing for us.

I still remember sitting down as a 19-year-old and helping come up with the name: Carmen Cares Cleaning Services.

The name came from a running joke we had: “Who cares? Carmen cares.”

And the truth is, she really did.

She cared about her clients, their homes, their families, and always went above and beyond. I even remember designing her very first business card. It was a purple floral design because purple has always been my favourite colour. At the time, neither of us could have imagined where this little business would one day lead.

Five years ago, I took over the business with a vision of growing it from a two-person operation into something much bigger.

Today, we have 4 teams, 8 permanent employees, caring for almost 200 Canberra homes.

That number still amazes me.

What makes this recognition so special is that we haven’t built this business through big advertising budgets or expensive marketing campaigns. We’ve built it through relationships, word of mouth, and the trust our clients have placed in us over the years.

We certainly weren’t perfect when we started. Some of our greatest lessons came directly from client feedback. Time and time again, our clients helped us see ways we could improve, and many of the little touches we are known for today came from listening carefully to the people we serve.

This award isn’t just recognition for our business.

It’s recognition of the incredible effort our team puts in every day. It’s recognition of the trust our clients have placed in us. And it’s recognition of Mum’s determination to keep this business going for more than 20 years.

We are incredibly proud to share that Carmen Cares Cleaning Services has been named a Finalist in the Australian Trades Small Business Champion Awards 2026.

Thank you to every client who has welcomed us into their home, every team member who takes pride in their work, and everyone who has supported us along the way.

Over the last few weeks we’ve received an overwhelming amount of enquiries, booking requests, and walkthroughs, and honestly we are so incredibly grateful for all the support Canberra has shown our small family business.

At this stage, our regular cleaning roster is now completely full while we work through all current quotes and pending bookings.

We’re Carmen Cares Cleaning Services, a local family-run business with over 20 years of experience caring for Canberra homes.

What we’re most proud of isn’t just the cleaning, it’s the relationships we’ve built over time. Many of our clients have been with us for years, and we show up to the same homes, with the same friendly faces, week after week.

We also keep the same team in your home each visit, so you’re not having different cleaners every time. Your team gets to know your home properly, and you get to know your team too. It builds trust, consistency, and genuine care over time.

We go beyond the basics. It’s the extra touches that make your home feel properly refreshed, not just clean. That feeling when you walk through the door and everything feels done and looked after, that’s always our goal.
