This corner render bead runs straight through the termite management inspection zone (the 75mm clearance required by Australian Standards). Instead of stopping at the system, it extends past it — and termites have used that exact gap to travel concealed, bypassing the management system entirely.

Here's why this matters:

1️⃣ The inspection zone exists for a reason. That 75mm clearance isn't arbitrary — it's there so any termite activity crossing from the ground into the structure is visible, not hidden behind building material.

2️⃣ A render bead left uncut is a bypass. Termites don't need much — a concealed strip like this gives them a direct, hidden route past the exact system designed to stop them.

3️⃣ It's an easy fix, if caught early. The bead should be cut or compressed at the inspection zone during construction or renovation — a simple detail that's often missed.

4️⃣ It's invisible from a casual look. From the outside, this wall looks completely normal. This is only obvious once you know exactly where — and how — to check.

This is exactly the kind of compliance detail a proper termite inspection is trained to catch — not just "is there termite activity," but "is the system actually doing its job."

This is what we found the moment we opened up the timber. 🐜

No mound, no obvious sign from the outside — just a live termite colony working through the wood, completely hidden until the timber was actually checked.

A few things this photo makes clear:

1️⃣ You often won't see it coming. Termites eat timber from the inside out, leaving the surface looking intact until damage is already significant.

2️⃣ A "quick look" isn't an inspection. This colony was only found because the timber was opened and checked directly — not from a walk-around or a glance at the skirting boards.

3️⃣ Different termites, different jobs. The lighter, softer-bodied termites are workers; you'll also spot the larger amber-headed soldiers whose job is to defend the colony. Seeing both is a sign of an established, active nest.

4️⃣ By the time it's visible, it's advanced. If termites are exposed this easily once timber is opened, the colony has likely been active for some time already.

5️⃣ This is why physical inspection still matters. No gadget replaces actually opening up a suspect area and looking.

Male Redbacks are harmless to humans — tiny, brown, and rarely seen. It's the female — glossy black with the distinctive red stripe — that delivers the venomous bite. She's also roughly the size of a large pea, while the male is barely bigger than a grain of rice.

Here's why this matters for Brisbane homeowners heading into spring:

🕷️ Spring is peak spider season. Warmer temperatures bring spiders out of winter dormancy, and Redbacks in particular become far more active from September through summer.

🕷️ They love cluttered, dry, undisturbed spots. Garden sheds, under outdoor furniture, letterboxes, gaps in brickwork, and children's play equipment left outside are all classic Redback territory.

🕷️ A bite needs medical attention. Redback bites cause significant pain and can lead to more serious symptoms — if bitten, seek medical care, don't wait it out.

🕷️ Webs are a giveaway. Redback webs are messy, irregular, and close to the ground — nothing like the neat orb webs of harmless garden spiders.

🌡️ vs 🔨 — two tools, one termite check.

Video 1: Thermal camera scan on a door/window frame. Nothing obvious shows up. Looks clean.

Video 2: Same exact spot, this time using a traditional sounding technique. Listen to that hollow "tap" — that's timber that's been hollowed out from the inside. Completely missed by the thermal camera.

This is exactly why we never rely on just one tool. 🐜

Thermal imaging is great for picking up moisture differences and activity in some situations, but termites don't always leave a heat signature — especially in drier timber or when activity has moved on. If we'd stopped at thermal, this damage would have gone completely unnoticed.

Sounding, on the other hand, physically tells you what's happening inside the timber, regardless of temperature.

The real takeaway: a proper termite inspection isn't about having the flashiest tool — it's about combining techniques so nothing gets missed. Sounding, moisture meters, thermal imaging, and a trained eye all catch different things. Used together, they build an accurate picture of what's actually going on behind the surface.

This is the kind of detail a quick DIY check — or an inspector relying on just one gadget — can miss entirely.
