Invasive pest detected in City of Wanneroo. 🪲

The first case of Polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB) has been detected in the City of Wanneroo.

The City is working with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) to enact a Tree Management Plan for the affected tree, which is located in Wanneroo, and will continue to monitor the location closely in the coming weeks.

First detected in Perth in 2021, the PSHB is a tiny, wood-boring beetle native to Southeast Asia. About the size of a sesame seed, PSHB excavates tunnels in trees where they cultivate fungus as a food source, resulting in tree dieback and death.

The City will continue to follow DPIRD’s lead in managing the spread of the PSHB and encourages the community to use the MyPestGuide app to report suspected sightings.

The number of sightings for foxes around Perth and our country areas are just growing. To help colllate accurate data on their population growth, it’s helpful if you can log your sightings on the below links.

FoxScan is a free resource for landholders, Landcare groups, community groups, local Councils, professional pest controllers, biosecurity groups and state governments . It has been designed by landholders for communities.

What to record:
Record fox sightings or evidence
Photos from monitoring cameras
Fox attacks (such as lamb or poultry predation)
Control activities (e.g. baiting & trapping).

All this data helps support us in creating better management practices for this feral pest.

🚧🐢 Caution: tiny turtles crossing!

Keep watch for adorable little Southwestern Snake-necked turtle hatchlings, which are beginning their long journey from the nest to nearby wetlands.

Hatchlings can be as small as a 10 cent coin, so they are hard to see on roads and footpaths. Help keep them safe by slowing down when driving, cycling or walking around natural areas and refraining from handling or feeding native wildlife.

Over the weekend, WA Health issued an alert that the mosquito-borne virus had been discovered at Pelican Point in Crawley, indicating a broader risk of transmission across the metropolitan area.

Ross River Virus, the most common mosquito-borne disease in WA, causes debilitating symptoms like joint pain, rash, fever, and lethargy, lasting weeks or even months.

"Unfortunately, there's no specific cure or vaccine, which means that really the best form of avoiding it is not getting bitten," Dr Mike Lindsay, Executive Director of Environmental Health, told Mark Gibson.

To prevent infection, the Department of Health advises using repellents, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating mosquito breeding sites.

"Wear long, loose fitting, light coloured clothing… mosquito nets and mosquito proof tents if you're going to be camping… repellent that is of oil of lemon eucalyptus, that work very well against mosquitoes."

The department also advises cleaning containers or receptacles around your home or property that hold water and could breed the insects.

Since July last year there have been 37 confirmed cases in the metropolitan area.

"We're still not at alarming levels. This is a long way off a major outbreak. But it does suggest that the virus is there, and it's well worth avoiding mozzies."
