🧽 YOUR KITCHEN SPONGE IS LITERALLY PLASTIC

Chux cloths? Plastic.
Those colourful scrubby sponges? Plastic.
Even microfibre cloths? Yep - plastic.

Every single time you wash dishes, wipe benches, or scrub the sink, you’re releasing thousands of microplastic fibres down the drain, into our water system. Straight into the Indian & Southern Oceans. 🌊

After 15 years & 90,000+ home cleans, we see these in EVERY South West kitchen. And honestly, it kills us knowing what they’re doing to our environment.

Here’s what happens:
Chux & synthetic sponges shed microplastics with every use. Those plastics are too small for treatment plants to filter, so they end up in our ocean, in fish, in the food chain. They never, ever break down. 😟

THE BETTER WAY:
✅ Natural fibre cloths (cotton, h**p, linen)
✅ Coconut fibre scourers for scrubbing
✅ Cotton dishcloths that can be boiled/washed/composted
✅ Bamboo cleaning cloths
✅ Old cotton t-shirts cut up (free!) They work just as well. They last longer. And when they’re done, they break down naturally instead of polluting our pristine coastline forever.

We stopped using synthetic cleaning cloths years ago. Our homes still sparkle - but our conscience is clearer 💚

October 19-25 is National Bird Week which aims to inspire us to take action & get involved with the conservation of our birdlife, many of which are endangered & facing high risks of extinction due to habitat loss & feral predators.

Here are 4 ways you can help birds thrive in your community:

🪹 Create a Bird-Friendly Garden: Plant native flowers, shrubs, & trees to provide natural food, shelter, & nesting sites.

🐈 Keep Cats Contained: Keep pet cats indoors or in a secure outdoor enclosure—cats are one of the biggest threats to native birds.

💦 Provide Fresh, Clean Water: Place a shallow birdbath in a shady, elevated spot out of reach of predators, & clean it regularly.

🦜 Participate in Local Bird Counts: Join citizen science projects like the Aussie Bird Count to help researchers track & protect local populations.

This week, 5-11 October is all about Australia's amazing wildlife. But keeping them safe takes all of us working together. 🐨

Here are four simple ways you can help protect our native animals this week & beyond:

🚘 Drive with Care: Slow down on roads near bushland, especially around dawn & dusk when wildlife is most active.

😻 Be a Responsible Pet Owner: Keep cats indoors or in an outdoor enclosure to prevent predation on native birds & small mammals, & keep dogs on leashes near natural habitats.

🪴Plant Native Species: Grow local flora in your garden to provide natural shelter, food, & pollen for native bees, birds, & insects.

💚 Support Local Rescue Groups: Save the Wildcare Helpline & FAWNA numbers in your phone so you are ready if you spot an injured animal.

Every action counts toward preserving our bushland & its inhabitants for generations to come.
