From Crumpled to Crisp: Mastering the Art of Ironing
Here are some practical tips and advice for ironing clothes efficiently and safely:
1. Sort Clothes First
By fabric type: Start with delicate (low heat) fabrics, then move to cotton and linens (high heat).
By level of wrinkling: Iron light wrinkles first to avoid overheating tougher items.
2. Check the Clothing Label
Look for ironing symbols:
One dot: low heat (silk, polyester)
Two dots: medium heat (wool)
Three dots: high heat (cotton, linen)
3. Use the Right Iron Settings
Adjust temperature for each fabric.
Use steam for stubborn wrinkles (unless fabric says "no steam").
4. Use a Clean, Padded Ironing Board
Avoid ironing on hard or dirty surfaces.
Use a pressing cloth (light cotton cloth) for delicate fabrics to prevent shine or burns.
5. Iron Damp Clothes or Use a Spray Bottle
Slightly damp clothes are easier to iron.
For dry clothes, lightly spray with water before pressing.
6. Iron in Sections
Start with collars, cuffs, and sleeves.
Then do larger flat areas: front, back, and legs.
Avoid re-wrinkling areas already done by moving carefully.
7. Hang or Fold Immediately
Prevents wrinkles from returning.
Use hangers for shirts, dresses, and trousers.
8. Safety Tips
Never leave the hot iron face-down on fabric.
Unplug after use.
Keep away from children.
